Pathophysiological Correlation between Cigarette Smoking and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cigarette smoke (CS) has been consistently demonstrated to be an environmental risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), although the molecular pathogenic mechanisms involved are yet elucidated. Here, we propose different by which CS exposure can cause sporadic ALS pathogenesis. Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation widely implicated in pathogenesis, with blood–spinal cord barrier disruption also recognised disease process. In addition, immunometabolic, epigenetic microbiome alterations have recently. Identification of underlying pathophysiological that underpin CS-associated will drive future research conducted into new targets treatment.

Prospective study of cigarette smoking and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Cigarette smoking has been proposed as a risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but because of the low incidence of ALS this association has been examined only with case-control methods. The authors prospectively assessed the relation between cigarette smoking and ALS mortality among participants in the Cancer Prevention Study II cohort of the American Cancer Society, a cohort of ...
متن کاملThe Correlation between Uric Acid Levels and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Introduction Uric acid (UA) may act as an antioxidant in ALS pathophysiology. This study examined whether serum UA concentration correlates to clinical course in the ALS patients. Methods We measured serum UA levels in 51 sporadic ALS patients, and compared them to 51 age-and-gender-matched healthy subjects. We analyzed the correlation between serum UA levels, illness duration , and disease “co...
متن کاملGenetic correlation between amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and schizophrenia
We have previously shown higher-than-expected rates of schizophrenia in relatives of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), suggesting an aetiological relationship between the diseases. Here, we investigate the genetic relationship between ALS and schizophrenia using genome-wide association study data from over 100,000 unique individuals. Using linkage disequilibrium score regressio...
متن کاملTranscranial magnetic stimulation and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: pathophysiological insights
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disorder of the motor neurons in the motor cortex, brainstem and spinal cord. A combination of upper and lower motor neuron dysfunction comprises the clinical ALS phenotype. Although the ALS phenotype was first observed by Charcot over 100 years ago, the site of ALS onset and the pathophysiological mechanisms underly...
متن کاملCorrelation between metabolic syndrome factors and cigarette smoking
Introduction: Cigarette smoking is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Previous studies demonstrate the adverse effects of smoking on serum lipid profile but there is no evidence that smoking is correlated with metabolic syndrome components such as lipid profile and obesity. The purpose of this study is evaluating lifestyle factors like smoking on metabolic syndrome compo...
